A Guide to Dismantling and Reassembling
Some larger or more complex household items may need to be dismantled before moving to help ensure they are transported safely and efficiently. Dismantling furniture can reduce the risk of damage during transit and may make it easier to navigate doorways, stairs and tight access points.
As a general rule, if an item is one (or more) of the following. It may need to be dismantled:
- Large or bulky
- Difficult to carry in one piece
- Likely to block access routes in your home
- Constructed with removable parts
Common Items That May Require Dismantling:
Beds
Bed frames are one of the most common items that require dismantling. This may include: Beds with storage compartments, headboards that are fixed to the frame and bunk beds.
Wardrobes and Large Storage Furniture
Wardrobes and fitted furniture may require dismantling if they cannot safely pass through doorways or staircases. This includes; flat-pack wardrobes that are already assembled, modular storage systems and sliding door wardrobes (doors may sometimes need removing).
Dining Tables and Living Room Furniture
Some tables and large furniture items can be moved more safely if partially dismantled. This may apply to; dining tables with removable legs, large conference-style tables and extendable tables.
Children’s Furniture and Play Equipment
Bulky children’s furniture and outdoor play equipment often needs dismantling before moving. For safety reasons, some outdoor equipment may need to be partially dismantled before transport.
Shelving, Cabinets, Storage Units and Desks
Shelving and storage units and home office furniture may be easier and safer to move if dismantled. Consider including: Free-standing shelving units and display cabinets.
Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor items that may require dismantling include:
- Garden sheds (where possible)
- Pergolas
- Large or fixed garden furniture
- Children’s outdoor play equipment
Please be aware that weathered or older outdoor structures may be more fragile during dismantling.
Specialist or Complex Items
Some specialist items may require additional handling considerations rather than full dismantling.
These could include:
- Pianos
- Pool tables
- Large home gym equipment
- Hot tubs and spa units
- Large framed artwork
