Overview of Edinburgh

Edinburgh is known around the world for its amazing history, friendly people and quaint, cobbled streets. It is home to the Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Castle, and even the café where J.K. Rowling started writing the first Harry Potter novel. As Scotland’s capital it is no surprise that it’s well sought after by home buyers but it can be difficult to know where exactly to move to. Edinburgh is vast and each area differs greatly. We’ve put together a list of the best areas to live in Edinburgh for families.

Stockbridge

Located north of the city centre, Stockbridge is ideal for families who want the best of both worlds: city living and small town life. Within its cobbled streets you will find an abundance of quirky shops on St Stephen’s Place and chic eateries by Raeburn Place. Stockbridge has rugby and cricket clubs as well as other sports facilities for those who want to keep fit.

Looking for other ways to entertain the kids? On a beautiful day Inverlieth Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens are perfect areas for running around and soaking up the sun. Or if it’s raining the National Gallery of Modern Art can entertain the little ones for hours.

Cramond

Cramond, a former fishing village, is located north-west of Edinburgh. Here you will find a mix of stately homes and more modern builds. You can find amazing views across the Firth of Forth here and it’s close to the beach making it ideal for those who want to be slightly further out of Edinburgh. J.K. Rowling reportedly lives here, so if it’s good enough for J.K. it’s good enough for you.

For kids there are plenty of outdoor spaces such as Cammo Park and Cramond beach. According to Ofsted there are plenty of good schools here, both private and public. In particular, the Royal High School, built in 1128 is Edinburgh’s oldest and most prestigious.

Morningside

Morningside is superbly located south of the city. You can walk there in around twenty minutes making it appealing to those who want to be near the city. It has the feel of a bustling village in the middle of the countryside and yet it is a stone throw from Scotland’s capital. There are lots of good transport links to Morningside and an array of boutiques, cafes and bars.

The Hermitage of Braid is an excellent attraction in Morningside which is rich in history and full of fun for all the kids. There’s also plenty of sports centres and parks to occupy them further. Here you can also find two of Edinburgh’s most sought after non-private schools: South Morningside Primary and Boroughmuir High School.

South Queensferry

For families looking for a bit more value for money when it comes to purchasing a home South Queensferry is an excellent option with houses being £100,000 cheaper (for a three bed) than the rest of Edinburgh. Houses here are slightly more modern than the other areas mentioned but they tend to be more spacious and require less work.  There are plenty of cafes, small shops and transport links to the city making it an attractive place for home-owners.

There are lots of good schools in the area too, for example, Queensferry High School and Echline Primary School are both well respected and sought after by parents in the local area.
