Moving to North London? Here is what to expect.

North London Area Guides

North London was entirely rural until the Victorian era with the arrival of the Regent’s canal and even today this area of leafy suburbs and urban villages still has a countryside feel. Though slightly out of central London buying property north of the Thames comes with a significant price tag.

In this blog we have put together a quick look guide at some of our favourite areas of North London.

The Classics

You can’t talk about North London without mentioning Hampstead and its notorious Heath. Dating back to the Doomsday Book this ancient woodland runs from Hampstead to Highgate and is home to 16 different sports including a lot of open water swimming across its three ponds. Another obvious North London classic is Primrose Hill sandwiched nicely between Regent’s Park and Belsize Park. Primrose Hill became best known in the 90s as it was home to high fashion celebrities whom the media coined the “Primrose Hill Set”. The area is still seen as one of the most fashionable districts in London so if you are looking for some gorgeous glamour look no further.

Fashionable and Affordable

On the other side of Hampstead Heath is Tufnell Park and Dartmouth Park where you can get more bang for your buck but within easy reach of artsy Kentish Town. It is a perfect place for young professionals wanting to jump on the property ladder, while also considering the long term, with access to North London’s favoured schools. Another slightly more affordable option in the north is West Hampstead, a thoroughly friendly community with a thriving high street. The three stations allow for great commuter links and it is only a stones throw from the woodland of Hampstead Heath and the conveniences of Swiss Cottage and the Finchley Road.

Family Friendly

Surrounded by parkland Crouch End is a winner for families when it comes to space and affordability. The area has a thriving village feel and lots of cafes, shops and restaurants as well as a wealth of good local schools and even a Waitrose. Neighbouring Muswell Hill isn’t short of green space either with Highgate Wood and sprawling Alexandra Park close by perfect for any doggy friendly families. It also boasts beautiful Edwardian architecture and lots of kiddy amenities on its lively Broadway. The leafy village of Highgate is another family favourite in North London but with this beautiful setting comes a hefty price tag. Highgate has a rich “arty” history with Karl Marx, George Eliot and Christina Rossetti all buried in its famous cemetery. With homes in Fitzroy Park, The Bishops Avenue and Bishopswood Road all commanding upwards of £10 million it is safe to say Highgate is a beautifully exclusive family friendly option.
