Case Study: Relocating an IBM S/360 Mainframe System for National Museums Scotland (NMS)
Clockwork Removals & Storage was approached to support the relocation of an historic IBM S/360 Model 30 mainframe, along with a 2401 Tape Drive and 2501 Card Reader, from National Museums Scotland (NMS) in Edinburgh to IBM’s Hursley site near Winchester.
With the Model 30 alone weighing over 820kg, this project required specialist handling, careful planning, and absolute precision. This was far beyond the scope of a standard transport task—our expertise in complex, heavy and sensitive moves was essential.
Planning & Preparation
Working closely with the team at NMS and IBM Hursley, we developed a logistical plan that balanced the museum’s tight schedules with the specialist equipment and personnel required. We carried out detailed assessments of:
- Access routes within both buildings
- Weight distribution and load security
- Protective packing and handling requirements
- Risk mitigation for vintage, irreplaceable technology
NMS prepared the equipment for transport while our team scheduled the move around a narrow operational window.
Collection & Transportation
In August our Edinburgh team collected the systems, securing each component for the long journey south. The equipment was transported with specialist lifting gear, heavy-duty protection, and continuous load monitoring to ensure safe transit.

Delivery & Installation
On 2nd September, our engineers Craig and Mark arrived on site at Hursley to begin the complex installation. The final stage included:
- Careful unloading and unpacking
- Manoeuvring large units through extremely tight doorways — in one case with just over a centimetre to spare
- Removing external covers and hinges to safely navigate the Model 30 through restricted access points
- Positioning all equipment precisely in its new display area
Thanks to meticulous planning and the skill of our crew, the entire system was delivered and installed without a single scratch.
The IBM S/360 Model 30, Tape Drive and Card Reader are now proudly on display in the new mainframe exhibit at Hursley. We are pleased to have played a key role in preserving and relocating this important part of computing history.
Clockwork Removals & Storage is proud to continue supporting museums, archives, and organisations with specialist, heavy and heritage moves requiring expertise, care and precision.
