Laboratory Relocation Case Study

Specialist Oversized Item Removal

At Clockwork our teams have the knowledge, expertise and equipment to carry out very specialist moves, whether that is in time sensitive working environments, museums, galleries or hospitals.

Our Edinburgh branch was recently asked to manage a move relocating -20 degree and -80 degree freezers, hoods, large cabinets and specialist laboratory equipment. Though the move wasn’t geographically that far it was very complex and was completed by a team of six operational staff along with ramped and tail lift vehicles. The team also needed nearly 100 specialist crates along with specialist lifting equipment.

The Logistics of the Move

After initial risk assessments had been conducted and walkways and equipment made safe for the removal, correx and floor protection was used to safeguard the lift and walkways. The crew packed the laboratory equipment into the crates using bubble blankets and paper to secure each item. In a similar manner the IT was protected with specialist monitor covers and then secured into larger IT crates. Whilst these crates were being packed by one part of the team another part were using specialist removals equipment to navigate them in stacks through the building and onto the ramped lorry.

Once all the crates were securely packed and loaded onto the vehicle the crew moved onto the larger equipment. A team of four operational staff set about moving the large hoods and cabinets whilst the two most experienced packers worked on using packing materials to secure the contents of the -20 degree and -80 degree freezers. These freezers were then moved by the whole team, using specialist moving equipment to ensure they were not tipped and remained upright for the duration of the move.

Once the crew arrived at the delivery address a risk assessment was taken out prior to work starting and the required areas were again protected with correx. The crates were then delivered from the ramped vehicles and unpacked at the required locations. The freezers were then carefully moved by the whole team into their new laboratory.

Our teams are on hand to fully project manage business moves throughout the UK across all sectors. Call us today on 0208 762 0777 or email [email protected] to speak to one of our experienced commercial move managers.
