Perth, also known as the “Fair City”, sits on the banks of the magnificent River Tay and is the county town for Perthshire. Only having had its city status reinstated in 2012, Perth is steeped in history and is the official “gateway to the Highlands”. If you are moving to Perth, take a look at this short guide of the city and its surrounding area to get a feel for what you can expect from one of Scotland’s oldest cities.
A country life or the bright lights of the city?
The city centre of Perth has a real mix of bars, cafes, shops and properties, from Georgian town houses to modern apartments, for a relatively small city, Perth packs a lot in. The city centre itself has a real blend of high street names as well as a thriving independent retail community, not to mention hosting a farmers’ market the first Saturday of every month, there really is something for everyone.
For those wanting the country life, Perth sits on one of the most famous salmon fishing rivers in the world, the mighty river Tay. If Golf is your thing, there is an abundance of courses, including the world-renowned Gleneagles golf course. Looking to enjoy the beautiful game? Then head to McDiarmid Park home to St Johnstone’s football club or perhaps you need some invigorating Perthshire air? Then why not bag one of the 26 Munro’s that the county has to offer or cycle one of the many off road cycle routes available.
Where to live?
The suburb of Craigie sits to the South West of the city centre and is a really popular residential area with quick and easy access to the city centre. Muirton is situated to the North of Perth and has undergone substantial residential redevelopment with a large number of new family homes, flats and apartments. Glasgow Road, Broxden and Oakbank are all popular choice for families, unsurprisingly given their proximity to Perth Academy and Perth High School as well as Viewlands Primary and Oakbank Primary Schools. Add in the easy access for commuters to the motorway network and you can see why this is one of the more sought-after residential areas. Over the bridges that cross the Tay, you’ll find the areas of Bridgend, Gannochy and Kinnoull. Kinnoull is particularly popular given the spectacular views over the city and surrounding area. In the last few years, the Inveralmond area of Perth has undergone substantial development, with not only the Bertha Park housing development but a newly built state of the art High School, which is also the only Microsoft Flagship school in the UK and one of only 17 across the world.
Perth and its surrounding area seem to be incredibly well served with educational establishments, from Perth College, which is part of the Highland and Islands University, to five High Schools, numerous primary schools and its fair quota of reputable independent schools too. With great network links and just over an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow, Perth is an extremely commutable place to live.

Perthshire is known as the “big county” due to its roundness and status as the 4th largest historic county in Scotland. With so much green space to enjoy with the North and South Inch parks in Perth and only a hop, skip and a jump to the stunning scenery and breath-taking landscape of Perthshire itself, Perth really does have everything. If city or suburban living really isn’t your thing, there are plenty of beautiful rural villages surrounding Perth all with a charm and character of their own. From Scone to Auchterarder, Comrie to Pitlochry, Perthshire really is a county with endless opportunity.
