The Boomerang Generation: When Adult Children Return Home
In recent years, the UK has witnessed a significant rise in the number of young adults returning to live with their parents—a phenomenon often referred to as the “boomerang generation.” This trend is largely driven by escalating housing costs and the high cost of living, particularly in urban areas.
Data from the Institute for Fiscal Studies indicates that between 2006 and 2024, the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds living with their parents increased from 13% to 18%, representing approximately 450,000 additional young adults residing in the family home. The Office for National Statistics also reported that in 2023, 42% of individuals aged 15-34 lived with their parents, with 60% of 21-year-olds and 50% of 23-year-olds among them.
This shift is particularly pronounced in cities like London, where housing affordability is a significant issue. In London, the average monthly rent for young adults living with parents is estimated at £1,000, compared to £560 elsewhere in the UK.
Financial Pressures and Lifestyle Adjustments
The primary motivator for this return is financial. A survey by Compare the Market found that 23% of 21- to 34-year-olds who rent privately have considered moving back into their family home due to high living costs, with 40% aiming to save for a property purchase.
While this arrangement can offer financial relief for young adults, it often necessitates significant adjustments for parents. A study commissioned by NatWest revealed that 55% of parents had to repurpose personal spaces, such as home offices or guest rooms, to accommodate their returning children. In many cases parents would need to utilise long term storage facilities to allow for more space.

The reintroduction of adult children into the family home requires careful navigation of shared spaces and responsibilities. Parents may find themselves decluttering and reorganising to create a comfortable environment for all. This process often involves balancing the need for personal space with the desire to support their children’s financial goals.
While the return home may not have been part of the original plan for many young adults, it offers an opportunity for families to come together, support one another, and navigate the complexities of modern life.
