Moving to the UK Stats 2012-2013

Posted on by Clockwork.Removals

The UK is hugely multicultural thanks to hundreds of years of immigrants settling here and being encouraged to celebrate their own culture and lifestyle. Although immigration has been tightly restricted in the last few years since the global recession hit, the UK remains one of the most popular destinations to move to. Many people move here for a job, whilst others come to look for work or to study at our world famous universities, and many decide to relocate here because the UK offers more freedom of lifestyle for minorities.

One of the most popular areas for those moving to England is the capital city, London. Every year hundreds of thousands of people flock to experience the city’s sights and tourist attractions, and a huge number choose to make London their home permanently – not just from abroad but from elsewhere in the UK.

  • 2.8 million people moved house in England to live in a different city/county within the UK
  • 195,000 people moved into London from elsewhere in England and Wales
  • 175,000 came to live in London from overseas
  • 110,000 people left London to live overseas
  • 25,000 people moved out of London to elsewhere in the UK
  • 60% of people who moved house in London, stayed in London (40% moved abroad/elsewhere in the UK)
  • 320,000 people emigrated out of the UK (2012-2013)
  • 35% people living in London were born overseas
  • 11% of people living in England were born overseas
  • A HUGE surge in migration has caused the number of people born overseas living in the UK to almost double to 7.5 million in just 10 years

If you’ve decided to join the thousands of people that have already made the move to London, there is a lot to learn and you’ll need to dedicate much time to researching your destination and the legalities of starting a new life in a new country.

The UK has so much to offer – including our exceptional infrastructure that provides safety, freedom, healthcare and education, and the added advantage that English is the international language for business and trade – so whether you’re looking for a country home, or you’re excited about joining the hustle and bustle of a thriving city, it’s easy to see why so many people chose to make the UK their home.
